SFG (Sexy Fat Guy)

July 20, 2009

meatloaf rocky horror

The other night i was watching Balls of Fury (due to Christopher Walken on the billing) and found myself oddly attracted to Dan Fogler. Now i say oddly because i am not ordinarily attracted to overweight guys and i never really understood the whole “chubby chaser” thing. To each his own. However in one scene as he prepared for an especially tense ping pong match he psyched himself up by listening to Def Leppard’s Rock of Ages. Only seconds into his performance I noticed a change; he now oozed a sort of charm, a palpable vibe, and i asked myself “Am i finding him sexy right now?”

I wasn’t sure at first but then it struck me. i’ve experienced this phenomenon before. It all came rushing back in a flood of unfamiliar feelings. When i was 15 i watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. It was then, when Meat Loaf burst from his confines on his motorcycle singing “Whatever Happened to Saturday Night” that i first felt that twinge. But it was all over when he slowly pulled the scarf his groupie girlfriend Columbia was wearing, cocked his head to the side and sang something about “jumping in the back seat.” I sprang up and declared “Holy! Meat Loaf is a sexy fat guy!?”

And it’s no mystery that the attraction is on account of the confidence he exudes. i mean, damn. It’s a simple equation really: fat guy + confidence = sexy. Throw in a motorcycle or in Fogler’s case, a ping pong paddle and you’re golden! I’m sure this swings both ways, like Kirstie Alley seems pretty sexy to me, but as a hetero woman i can only truly vouch for the men. It’s as if some portly guys (especially those on TV) are so busy being the funny guy that they never learned how to be sexy. I know, i know, funny is sexy. But not always. And it’s even harder when you’re 300 lbs. But I guess what i’m saying is you too (yes, you in the back of the class who gets called “fatty” at recess) can channel your inner Meat Loaf while still chowing down on, well, meatloaf (what did you expect?). All hail the SFG!

It’s so weird because I just saw some of the RHPS a couple weekends ago, sitting there with Mutterskopf of all people. And that scene came on and I was like “Man, watch Meatloaf go!” He’s magnetic for those few shining moments before (SPOILER!!!) he gets literally axed.

I think John Goodman is a classic sexy fat guy, too.
