Republicans: The Anti-Government Party

I understand, empathize with, and have some of my own distrust and skepticism of government. I guess that’s not saying much cause who doesn’t. But it blows my mind that the GOP can somehow become the torch bearer for this sentiment. Has it always been that way? It seems insane to me to put your faith in one of the two major political parties to somehow be “against” the government. But it happens. Here in this NYT blog is this little nugget that struck me, about the dynamic between some lawmakers and the protests going on around Congress right now:

Several Republicans appeared on a second-floor balcony of the Capitol above the crowd to give the protesters the thumbs up and display their own “Kill the Bill” signs. The Republicans even borrowed a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag from the group to wave above the crowd before returning it.

A head-scratcher, eh? It really should be an exercise in cognitive dissonance but apparently for a lot of people it isn’t. Yeah the GOP – the power to the people party!
