Captain Obvious? Bullying Overweight Children

May 3, 2010

When I saw the headline for this article about a study of kids, obesity and bullying, I said, “No shit, Sherlock.” To myself.

However, as gratuitous a study as it may seem, and how inconceivable that someone ponied up the cash to see it happen, I didn’t consider that things were different now. To wit:

This finding is “so disturbing to me,” Dr. Julie C. Lumeng from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, who led the study, told Reuters Health.

She also admitted being a bit surprised. “Unlike in the 1980s,” she explained, “so many kids are obese now. In some schools, half the class may be overweight…so I really thought that maybe being obese really doesn’t result in being bullied as much anymore. I was wrong.”

Okay, so there are so many fat kids now, she is surprised they still get teased. I personally find it disturbing that she finds that disturbing. Will Dr.Lumeng only be satisfied when the tipping point is reached and we have more obese children than not? She’d rather see weight-based bullying wiped out by across-the-board fatness than a majority of healthy children. Demented.

Even if everyone was fat, there would be 1 kid who’s fatter than everyone else. So that kid would be the ‘real’ fatso.
